Take a shuttle from the airport and relax. Rent a car only for the days you need it, for beach hopping, Rincón de la Vieja or a sunset drive to Playa Avellanas.

Good to know 

Insurance: basic liability insurance is required by law in Costa Rica. Make sure it’s included when you compare rates. 

Driver’s license: your valid home-country license works for up to 90 days. 

Bring your passport when you pick up the car. 4x4: recommended from May to November or for more remote beaches. 

High season: from December to April, book early because cars sell out fast.
